Abstract

The pension system in Poland is based on an index model, which provides for the calculation of pensions on the basis of indexed pension contributions and indexed initial capital accumulated in the insured’s individual accounts, as well as life expectancy. The statutory retirement age for women (60) is lower than for men (65). The projected amount of the pension is usually significantly lower than the last salary (in the present day, on average, it is half of it, and in the future it will be only about 25%).
The aim of the presentation is to assess the financial behaviours and attitudes in terms of money management that may affect their financial resilience and financial well-being during retirement in case of pre-retirement age people in Poland. The term ‘pre-retirement age’ is defined as the final decade prior to attaining retirement age.
The source of the data is the study “Preparing for old age. Poles of pre-retirement age about their old age” conducted at the turn of 2024 and 2025, during which questions about knowledge of silver economy products were asked during a quantitative study (N=1511).
As indicated by the findings of the study, the majority of Poles who are approaching retirement age expressed a preference for supplementary financial provisions beyond the standard pension scheme. However, the investigation revealed that only a minority of these individuals disclosed that their motivation for saving was to accrue additional funds for their post-retirement years. It has been demonstrated to be associated with financial behaviours and attitudes in terms of general money management, as well as to levels of procrastination. A divergence of these opinions is observable according to education level, place of residence, marital status of people in pre-retirement age, as well as according to their status on the labour market. Conversely, with respect to age and gender, the group is characterised by a notable degree of homogeneity in this particular dimension.
The project was financed by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education under the “Science for Society 2” programme.
