Abstract

In Argentina, as in most Latin American countries, women work informally, have no social security coverage nor social protection. and are self-employed workers who earn what they work for the day. Most work in domestic service or in personal services such as caring for children, the elderly or sick, others as manicurists, hairdressers or masseuses. They do not pay pension contributions, so when they reach retirement age they have no pension. The last government allowed women of pensionable age without contributions access to a minimum pension. Now the new government eliminated during 2024 the periodical increase of all pensions, meanwhile the cost of living and especially medicines highly increased. So all pensions with the minimum payment- 50 % of all pensions – have to choose between eating or taking medicines. Those who own their homes are unable to pay for utilities and taxes. The situation is worse for women than for men because more are at the minimum salaries. The freeze of pensions during 2024 is the main contribution to achieve Milei’s promise to reach fiscal adjustment, which was reached at expenses of millions of retired people. The economic success of the president is the death trap of the retired people, especially women.
