INTER-GENERATIONAL BONDING

Abstract

Our experience and study of recent past shows,India inherited and practiced learning from ancient history and culturally rich heritage of Upanishad i.e. “Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava, Acharya Devo Bhava, Atithi Devo Bhava. It literally means “be one for whom the Mother is God, be one for whom the Father is God, be one for whom the Teacher is God, be one for whom the Guest is God” and followed a Joint Family culture which was the back bone of a strong value system adopting Respect for Elders, Accommodation, Sacrifice among others and nurturing family bond for many years. One’s strength came to other’s help but one’s weakness never come to light as there was no “Mine & Yours” it was all “Ours”. With changing times, increasing aspirations and opportunities for Learning & Earnings elsewhere, paved way for migration which has substantially grown resulting into moving away from joint family culture with feeling of “Me, Myself & Mine”. Family gathering becoming less frequent, many children in urban areas not living with grandparents hence no opportunity to interact with them and hence deprived of their Love & Affection.

Realizing this as an important factor for improving social fabric, Our Prime Minister, has directed the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India to work on this issue and the Ministry has initiated special “One Day Sensitization programme for promoting Intergeneration Bonding” for Schools & Colleges. These programmes are designed by National Institute of Social Defense under the Ministry and executed by Regional Resource & Training Centers (RRTC). Recognizing the contribution of Janaseva Foundation in the field of elderly care and destitute rehabilitation for past 30 yrs. the Ministry has awarded a special status of RRTCs to Janaseva Foundation. There are seven other NGOs awarded RRTC status at national level.

This programme is highly effective. Our RRTC has covered more than 1000 students and all RRTCs together have reached out to nearly 25,000 students in past few years and plan to cover more schools & Colleges during next five years with a target to cover Half a Million students. Every programmes has a pledge that “I will not send my parents / grandparents to Old Age Home”. We also undertake elder education programmes aimed at adopting digital technology and use of mobile and social network to improve connectivity with loved ones helping to enhance bonding between senior citizens and grandchildren.
