Abstract
Ensuring the highest quality of care can be directly correlated to workforce performance. Enhancing workforce capabilities in the aged care sector requires targeted strategies addressing training, recruitment, retention, workplace culture and leadership.
My paper will explore the methods and priorities to boost workforce performance in residential aged care and provides actionable insights, with a specific focus on the following themes.
Retention Strategies: high attrition rates in aged care are being experienced across the sector, running at an average of 29%. This must be addressed through a clear focus on improving job satisfaction and a strong and compelling employee value proposition (EVP). Recognition and understanding of the experiences of front line workers is as critical as, if not more so, than wages and flexibility.
Professional Development and Training: implementation of continuous education programs, covering areas such as dementia care, palliative care and person-centred care. Integrating online learning platforms with on the job, just in time learning that will further help the workforce adapt to modern practices and technologies.
Workforce Planning and Recruitment: effective workforce planning models that anticipate future needs based on skills, competencies, demographic trends that will ensure aged care providers can meet sustainable staffing levels today and in the futre. Meeting the growing demand, out of the box thinking on recruitment strategies through engagement with underrepresented groups such as Indigenous Australians and multicultural communities.
Technology Integration: adoption of technology that enhances operational efficiencies and improves care delivery. Technology such as telehealth solutions and workforce management systems streamline workflows, and allow staff to focus on direct care, whilst also reducing physical strain to support workers in demanding roles.
Leadership and Culture: strong and effective leadership is fundamental in delivering workforce performance. In today’s challenging environment, aged care providers must invest in developing leaders who prioritise employee wellbeing, collaboration and ethical practice, whilst acting as role models for values and behaviours. Cultivating a workplace culture that is rooted in respect, diversity and inclusion ensures a positive environment where staff can be their best.
Embedding an Inclusive Culture: can be achieved through the promotion of respect for diversity, implementation of systems and frameworks that make the challenging role of front line workers easier, and recognising the ageing workforce in the sector, creates a safe environment for our diverse workforce.
A multifaceted approach is essential to fully optimise workforce performance in the aged care sector. With a focus on education, attraction, retention, culture and technology, providers can build a resilient workforce prepared to deliver the highest quality of care. Embracing these strategies will not only improve care outcomes but also position the sector to address future challenges effectively.
And in conclusion, to effectively embed any of the above strategies, engage with your front line workers, ask them what challenges they experience every day, what would make their job easier, and use their insights as a key building block to every solution.
